Apartments - a great accommodation option!

Our First Apartment Experience

In 2001, we had our very first apartment experience - the Radio City Apartments in New York City. The location was brilliant - between 6th and 7th Avenues so handy for shopping on 5th Avenue and Times Square (Broadway is effectively 8th Avenue). There was a coffee shop downstairs, Dean and Delucca (iconic NYC deli along the street) and adjoining D & D, a wine shop. The apartment was cheap for New York, small but what do you expect, clean and we had access to the laundry, in between loads of towels and sheets.

I would totally recommend these apartments - not posh but if you want to stay in the centre of Manhattan without taking out a mortgage, this is the spot.

More Recent Experiences

Melbourne

Now grandparents, we planned a family holiday in Melbourne. The prospect of imprisoning a 2 1/2 yr old in a hotel room was not an option -not to mention the cost of eating every meal out!

Through the internet we found an ideally located three bedroom, two bathroomed apartment behind Southbank

Southbank has a wonderful selection of restaurants and we were only a couple of blocks away, plus fortunately there was a convenience store around the corner.

We quickly discovered this apartment did not even have salt, pepper or dishwashing liquid. Otherwise, clean spacious, well located (23rd floor) and an ideal option complete with laundry facilities.

Sydney

Just this week we have returned from a few days in Sydney, staying at the Annam Suites, 23 Shelly Street, Kings Wharf. A wonderful location, (supermarket downstairs) reasonable price and well appointed apartment (love those laundry facilities) with pleasant pool and gym, however the draw back was our apartment and spacious balcony overlooked the city and harbour motorway approach. The noise was deafening!

Next time, we would stay here provided we could be on the Darling Harbour side.

General Tips

Often apartments do not have onsite management, so make sure you have clear arrangements about keys and access. This also means not finalising a bill with a person, but by leaving your credit card details - check re cost of phones etc.

Do not expect your apartment to have anything other than loopaper and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Make sure you know exactly how much traffic flows past - ie. maps may not show motorway on ramps as part of the street plan!

Apartments are often cheaper than hotels, have balconies - perfect if you do not enjoy airconditioning, have laundries, have kitchens so you can picnic or eat in, have the benefit of separate living and sleeping areas and are ideal if you are travelling with children.
