Karen and Gordie
find an ideal island resort

Octopus Island Fiji
On their return from a visit to Scotland, Karen and Gordie stayed at Octopus Resort
on Waya Island in the Yasawa group of islands to the north west of Fiji. Here are
some of their photos and recommendations:
Getting There out to the Island
We caught the Yasawa flyer which was a biggish
catamaran (owned by Awesome Adventures) out there (a short taxi ride from Nadi to
Denarau Marina = $10) . This is the biggest boat going out to Octopus Island and
a good idea if you get sea sick! It cost $67NZ return each and took about 2hrs each
way.
On the Island
The resort was beautiful with a good standard of accommodation, beautiful beach,
decent snorkeling (a lot of the coral was dead but growing back and lots of beautiful
fish to look at) and diving instruction available (some saw a lion fish). Also available
are kayaks and fishing trips.
The cost was $135 per night for a garden bure (these have been refurbished first)
and $185 per night for a beach front bure. The garden bures are about 30 yards from
the beach. These prices include breakfast (cereal, toast, fruit, juice, coffee) you
can pay extra for a cooked breakfast if you wish, and dinner (starter and main course)
again you can pay extra for desert. Lunch was extra and included a good selection
from fruit platter, pizza, salads,
noodles to burgers and cost $8-10. The meals were all good quality and we heard no
complaints. In the evenings, cocktails were available including pina coladas, tequila
sunrises etc and cost about $9. The local beer was good but I wouldn’t recommend
the wine! They did a traditional night of Fiji cuisine
preceded by Fijian singing and dancing by the staff. This consisted of a variety
of meat and vegetarian dishes including some delicious baked fish (Wahoo). There
was also a welcome for new arrivals with a kava ceremony. The staff were locals and
their wellbeing was a priority. Compared to other resorts in the area this seemed
to be very good value for money and is highly recommended.
