Overnighting in LA

Ruth refuses to fly more than 12-13 hours at a time - but what do you do in LA?

Breaking Your Journey

Sometimes by the time you get on the plane for a trip, you are absolutely exhausted and your nerves are frayed. Also the prospect of flying from NZ to UK/Europe in one hit is just too exhausting.

We now overnight in LA. It gives us a break and a rest so we can really enjoy our holiday. Here are some of our recommendations.

Booking an airport hotel

Try the web site HotelDiscounts.com

http://www.180096hotel.com/

We have enjoyed good deals at the LAX Westin, stayed at the Furama which is old but ok. It would be interesting to hear of others recommendations.

We found most airport hotels have a free shuttle service - the shuttles just constantly circle the airport so keep your eyes peeled and be prepared to jump into the roadway waving!!

The Blue Bus

If we arrive in the morning, which many flights do, we take the Blue Bus, local bus company, to Santa Monica. It only costs a $1 or so.

Santa Monica

Santa Monica Shopping Mall is delightful, and the Pier and beachfront pleasant. Sometimes we go for a late lunch. There is a good restaurant called the Lobster something, also along the beachfront is Ivy's - a bit of a spot the film star restaurant.

Getty Museum

Using the Blue Bus creatively (transferring at Santa Monica) one can travel to The Getty Museum, which really is worth the trip.

Venice Beach

You can also take the Blue Bus to Venice Beach, which is fun for a visit - lots to look at in the way of stalls and Muscle Beach if you are that way inclined.

By the time you get back to the hotel, have a good sleep you are ready to set off on your adventure.
